We put the 132inch BlackCrystal through our standard battery of tests, plus some real-world viewing scenarios using our 2024 previously reviewed UST projector, the Samsung Premiere 9.
During the cave sequence in "Dune" (2021), the screen's ability to maintain deep blacks while preserving shadow detail was remarkable. Testing "Mad Max: Fury Road's" desert scenes revealed the screen's excellent ambient light rejection capabilities. Even with our lab's overhead LED lights at full brightness, the image retained punchy contrast and vibrant colors. The 95% ambient light rejection claim seems conservative based on our measurements.

Performance: The center viewing angle is better than the Black Series, but the viewing angle is only 90 degrees.

UST projector screen materials come in two types: Lenticular and Fresnel. These materials differ in their screen structure, leading to variations in display performance.
Generally speaking, we recommend CLR lenticular screens as they are more suitable for ordinary households.
If you only plan to watch movies side-by-side with 2-3 family members on a daily basis, and accept Fresnel's 90-degree viewable angle. you can choose a Fresnel screen.
This is because Fresnel screens offer brighter image during daylight hours compared to lenticular screens. (center vision).
However, for ALR Fresnel screens, the viewing angle is typically only around 70-100 degrees. This means that apart from the central position, where the optimal picture is achieved, the brightness of the image seen from other angles is inferior.
If you're aiming to use your screen and projector as a substitute for a traditional TV, especially for hosting gatherings with friends during happy hour, we recommend opting for a Lenticular screen.
From my personal experience, if you're using a high-end ultra short throw projector with very high brightness—like the AWOL 3500—the image can appear slightly harsh when paired with a Fresnel screen. However, if your projector has a more limited brightness output—such as the Formovie Cinema edge or other budget models—the Fresnel screen can significantly enhance perceived brightness and deliver a better viewing experience.

As shown in below videos, we'll compare the difference of Lenticular and Fresnel screens at 0 degrees, 45 degrees, and nearly 90 degrees.
Please be aware that the overexposure of the Fresnel screen at 0 degrees is not accurate because of the camera parameters. In real-life viewing by your eyes, it will not be like that.
Fresnel screens can sometimes produce hotspots when used with ultra short throw projectors, especially if the screen has a lower-quality build and overly high gain. However, our Fresnel screen is made with premium materials and carefully optimized, so you won’t encounter this issue.
